If I be lifted up…

making_cross2I assembled an 8 foot cross last summer. Now that I have moved to North Raleigh, I want to saturate the area with an awareness of Jesus, of His cross and His resurrection. Standing on the side of the road holding the cross during a morning commute, the verse from Jn 12:32 floats in my mind and stirs my heart. Some drive past looking away. A few honk or wave in solidarity. Most are puzzled. All men drawn to Him. Saved and sinner.

So, a plan emerges. Five spots around the area, plus three sort of at the fringes, where heavy morning traffic will flow past. You can see them in the map which covers about a 5 x 5 mile area. The stars represent the two offices where I work and my home, all of those within about a mile,Cross_Points

Each day I move to another spot. On the 6th day, I add in one of the purple spots. This way, I hit all of the red spots once a week, and all of the purple spots once a month. I think, rain or shine.  Who knows. But I am urged to do something. This is something. I am a living bill board. A solitary protester against the ravages of sin. An adorer of His, asking people to consider His cross in whatever ways God chooses.

I’m thinking after a month or two, many people in the area will have seen me or heard of the guy with the cross. Then on Saturdays, I’ll spend an hour in each of two or three major shopping area parking lots with the cross. Will someone come up and talk, ask me what I’m doing? It’s just the start of something to do, something that says I take the proclamation of the cross seriously. May I tell you a secret? Oh, how my heart is stirred with His presence. I am filled with such joy during these simple vigils. I so want Art on July 18others to know my Jesus! Pray with me?  Pray to Him for laborers… and for the harvest.

Laborers are regular, troublesome, on and off people like everyone else. But they keep working, Just yesterday, standing on the side of the road with the cross, Satan accused me—in the way your mind has an ongoing conversation and thoughts just barge in—he accused me of having impure motives. Had me for a split second. Then, duh, no kidding. Sure I do. a) Doesn’t matter1, and b) the one I am lifting up is PURE.

So don’t wait for permission or perfection. Those are just ways to delay obedience. He said, “Go…” So, go already.

1 Phil 1:15-18 “Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel. What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.
